HISTORY: Wiki Link & Fandom Wiki

PERSONALITY: Yusuke didn't choose the thug life...

At first glance, Yusuke Urameshi appears to be nothing more than your stereotypical teenage outcast. Growing up with an absentee father and an alcoholic mother meant Yusuke was neglected more often than not. This lead to him acting out with illicit behavior in order to receive attention, which quickly earned him a bad rep as a bully known for picking fights with others. As he's gotten older his tendency towards violence has increased and as a result his bad reputation became more widespread. At the young age of 14 he's labeled the most nefarious delinquent at his junior high and is completely ostracized by the entirety of his peers, save for his childhood friend Keiko Yukimura. All of this plays into how Yusuke views his own self worth, to the point that even he believes his life is not worth saving when he is killed in a car accident and given the choice to return to the world of the living. Even his teachers openly comment that he is a no good failure who will never get anywhere in life, which leads to Yusuke skipping classes more often than he attends them, often missing school for days or even weeks at a time. None of that seems to bother him on the surface, but underneath the hardened facade lies a misunderstood, heavily troubled youth.

He's definitely a troublemaker, with a short-fused temper and one hell of a potty mouth. He's rude, blunt and always speaks his mind, completely lacking a brain to mouth filter. He's loud, gruff, and has a knack for causing mischief whether it's intentional or not. Sure, he's not the brightest crayon in the box but when it comes to street smarts, he's your guy. Yusuke genuinely enjoys fighting, far better at expressing himself with his fists than with words. Physical combat is the one activity he excels at in life, which is why you'll always find him cruisin' for a bruisin'. He'll go out of his way to start fights and provoke people into a skirmish. He lives for that shit.

Despite the fact he is made out to be this big bad criminal, Yusuke is actually very kind with a strong moral compass and a fierce desire to do what is right. While his execution may not typically be the most honorable, his intentions are almost always in the right place. For instance, even though no one expected it, he sacrificed himself to save a little boy from being hit by a car without a second thought, which at the time resulted in his own death. He's impulsive and reckless, with little care for the consequences his actions may invoke. Always speaking without thinking and leaping without looking. Though more commonly it's to some sort of humorous effect. Always cracking inappropriate jokes and working his quirky and sardonic comedic charm whenever he gets the chance. Teasing and bantering back and forth is his main method of communication, he can be rather endearing that way once people get to know him. He acts all big and tough but deep down he's just a huge softie.

As the series progresses he becomes less of a loner and begins to form close bonds with his teammates, the first true examples of friendship he's ever known. Though he won't openly admit it, he values their companionship above all else and develops a fiercely protective attachment to them all. Most notable is his relationship with his school rival turned best friend, Kuwabara, whose staged death is the ultimate catalyst to unlocking Yusuke's true power during The Dark Tournament. Overwhelmed with despair at the idea he was unable to save his closest friend, Yusuke mercilessly unleashes his fury on the one responsible for his death in order to avenge him. While seemingly fearless when it comes to battle, the idea of losing someone important to him is what inevitably drives him over the edge every time.

Yusuke doesn't have many good role models in his life, seeing as how his own mother would rather go out and party then take care of him and his teachers, with the exception of his principle Takenaka, treat him like some worthless animal. Which is likely the reason Yusuke has issues with authority figures in general, which leads to him showing his ass and rebelling against anyone and everyone who tries to order him around. That includes Koenma who gives him all of his main gigs as a spirit detective. The two are constantly bickering back and forth, with Yusuke almost always complaining about having to embark on various missions to save humanity. At one point he states he's more worried that he won't be able to enjoy his three day weekend if he entered a competition to prevent a demon from gaining powers that could prove devastating to the living world if used with ill intent. Yes, he is actually that lazy. Of course, he does it anyway. This being the same contest that leads to his very first encounter with Genkai and allows him to become her disciple. Genkai doesn't put up with his crap, which is the quickest and surest way to gain Yusuke's respect- though he may not be happy about it. He calls her "granny" to agitate her on purpose, but Genkai has truly become like something of a grandmother to him. Genkai was the very first parental-type figure to try to beat some sense into him and believe in him, despite his many faults. Yusuke values Genkai's opinion above anyone else's and strives to do what he can to make her proud as her successor.

Recently having died for a second time, being reborn as a demon has somewhat altered his mental state. Not only did he discover he is the descendent of an ancient and powerful demon known as the Mazoku, but said demon then proved capable of possessing Yusuke's body during his battle with Sensui, and used Yusuke's untapped demon power to kill him. Thus making Sensui the first human that Yusuke has killed. Since then, Yusuke has struggled with coming to terms with his true identity and suffered an amplified feeling of displacement in the human world. Life isn't fair, and Yusuke knows that better than anyone, but he doesn't let that stop him from pursuing a better life for himself and those who matter to him. Since it stands to reason that he could potentially be used as a vessel for the Mazoku to wreak havoc in the living world, he decides to abandon it. It's not an entirely selfless act, however. Desiring to learn more about this part of himself and his newly appointed demon status Yusuke decides to journey to demon world in search of answers from his ancestral father who resides there. He's an all or nothing type of guy, and it shows in his willingness to leave his human life behind, knowing he may never be able to return. Even though this decision puts a strain on some of his closest relationships, namely Keiko and Kuwabara, Yusuke feels he must do this if he ever has any hope of figuring out who he is. He promises them both that he'll return in three years, but that isn't even remotely guaranteed. Nevertheless, he's completely confident he'll manage to find a way back, despite the impossible odds stacked against him. Which is literally his approach to every obstacle he's ever faced.

All in all, Yusuke may not be your typical teenage dirtbag but he's no saint, either. His attitude is problematic at best, but underneath is a heart of (mostly) gold. He's still trying to figure himself out, and though he's made more than his fair share of mistakes along the way, he refuses to simply give up on himself or others. Even going so far as to extending courtesies to his enemies at times, usually to his own detriment. He is both compassionate and strong willed, unwilling to settle for what others might want for him. He's carving out his own path, and he's doing it in style.

ABILITIES/SKILLS:

- Spirit Gun: A highly concentrated assembly of Yusuke's spirit energy that he's able to convert into a weapon in the form of a powerful blast via his index finger when pointed at his opponent like a gun. This is Yusuke's signature move and the technique he relies on with the most frequency.

- Shotgun: Using the same basic technique mentioned above he can also perform what he refers to as "shotgun" which is multiple shots of spirit energy fired in repetition from his fist. This is more effective against multiple enemies or in the event that wide range attacks would be more useful. This is because the individual power of each blast is diminished due to his spirit energy being divided into multiple blasts, compared to the singular all-in-one shot that encompasses all of his spirit energy with his spirit gun. Yusuke only really uses it if he's outnumbered.

- Spirit Wave: The technique he learned from Genkai which allows him to transform his entire body into a catalyst for his spirit energy based attack. This ability is more like a "trump card" and he's only really known for using it as a last resort due to the vast amount of energy it requires and how difficult it is to control.

- Spirit Awareness: Having died and become a spirit for a time, this gave Yusuke the ability to sense spiritual energy in others upon his revival. In other words, he can perceive another spiritual being's aura which gives him a basic run down of their stats in relation to power level and spiritual capabilities. This ability has become like second nature to him.

- Superhuman Abilities: Including but not limited to: enhanced agility, increased durability, exceptional stamina and super strength beyond that which a normal human is capable of. In many instances throughout the show he's gone toe to toe with demons whose speed and power should've vastly outranked his own as a human. He's suffered blows that should, by all means, prove fatal to any normal human and emerged with nothing more than a few scratches or a bloody nose. He can run for four days on end at full speed without breaking a single sweat or stopping for a bathroom break. His punches can send his opponent flying through the air and knock them right through a brick wall, or several brick walls if he hits them hard enough. He's like the greaser version of superman, okay???

-Demonic Transformation: This is the physical manifestation of Yusuke's demon heritage. In this form he greatly resembles his ancestor Raizen in appearance. Demon markings resembling tattoos appear on various parts of his body and in come cases his hair even grows to a ridiculously long length, covering the entire length of his back and then some. So like the demon version of a Chia pet. In this state his power increases to that of a upper level S-class demon, which is the strongest class in terms of demon hierarchy. This transformation is rare and has only occurred once at Yusuke's current point in canon. At the time Yusuke was on the verge of being defeated and most likely killed which is when his demon instincts kicked in and his demon ancestor took over.

INVENTORY/COMPANIONS: Just the clothes on his back and the miscellaneous items in his hobo nap sack. Comic books and porn mags, along with some fresh undies, most likely. Teenage boy essentials.

FACTION CHOICE: Court of Stars.

REASON:
"Once again you didn’t use your brain, you acted on heart and dumb instinct.”
-Koenma to Yusuke

Yusuke is always barreling full speed ahead. His motto might as well be to act first, ask questions later. He relies heavily on his intuition to guide him through life, and more often than not survives on pure luck as opposed to any sense of logic or strategy. Truthfully, he comes off as this highly skilled combatant when really he's just winging it. Therefore I can't think of a more fitting faction to sort him into than the Court of Stars.

TATTOO: The constellation Phoenix, stretching across his entire back with the "wings" depicted on his shoulder blades.

'S this thing on?? Hello--?? Damn piece of crap....

[Yusuke has had a few bad experiences involving a demon compass... whenever this sort of technology is involved it never bodes well for him. He's very clearly struggling with the device... yes that loud clanging noise is definitely him banging the compass on the nearest solid surface in an attempt to get it in proper working order.

Give him a moment.

He finally glances up to see the holographic video projection of himself and a silent "O" forms on his lips, followed shortly by an embarrassed, cheeky grin. He laughs nervously through clenched teeth, a visible vein pulsing on his forehead.]

Dammiiiiit... How long has this thing been rolling??

[WITH HIS LUCK IT PROBABLY RECORDED HIM SITTING ON THE TOILET EARLIER. ok no, it didn't, but he's sure as hell not ruling it out. regardless, that grinning little charade shatters in less than a second and he's MAD!!!]

Ah, screw it!

[FORGET THE PLEASANTRIES Yusuke gets right down to business.]

Listen up! Whoever this big shot Emperor guy thinks he is, apparently he's too much of a coward to actually show his face! I dunno about you guys but I was kind of in the middle of something before someone decided to completely derail that train off it's tracks. So I'd like to buy a ticket to board the next flight to China town. [get it? China town... cause he's the Emperor....] You hear me, asshole?!? I don't have time to play your stupid war games!!

[he's gonna keep shouting till he's blue in the face, just watch:]

If you won't come to me then I'll come to you, wise guy! You heard right! Yusuke's coming so you'd better boil up a kettle of tea!!!

[dramatic cut to black.

only his audio is still broadcasting....

is that his stomach growling??? at this rate who even knows....]

Damn, all that yelling really worked up my appetite. Wonder if there's any good eats around here...

[RECC HIM SOME GRUB??? maybe it'll keep him from storming the palace, at least temporarily.]
